SAN FRANCISCO, California, September 16, 2024 –  Climate science pioneer Bennu today announced a breakthrough methane elimination solution that permanently removes excess methane emissions from the atmosphere. Deployed at scale, Bennu’s technology has the potential to destroy gigatons of methane from the planet’s atmosphere, reducing atmospheric methane levels and reducing the rate of global warming.

Methane is a powerful greenhouse gas, at least 28 times more potent than carbon dioxide at trapping heat in the atmosphere. Human-induced methane emissions have created a surplus of four gigatons of methane to the atmosphere which drives roughly a third of the global warming we experience today.

Bennu’s technology leverages a natural photochemical process that destroys methane molecules. By emitting high-frequency UV light, Bennu initiates a reaction with the oxygen molecules within the light beam that permanently eliminates methane molecules.

Bennu, formerly Blue Dot Change, has investigated methane removal processes in its labs for several years and met all regulatory requirements to successfully pilot-test its technology on a Lomar Shipping cargo vessel, in the framework of its collaboration with their corporate venture lab, lomarlabs. Bennu will continue to test the technology on ocean vessels along existing shipping routes for the remainder of 2024.
