Tackling Maritime Methane: Our Upcoming Pilot Test with Lomar in Summer 2025
5/6/25, 7:00 PM
Bennu is pilot testing its technology in real-world maritime conditions this summer, in partnership with lomarlabs.
As momentum grows around climate innovation in the maritime industry, Bennu, together with lomarlabs - Lomar’s innovation arm – will chart new territory this summer with a pilot test. The pilot will showcase our cutting-edge methane mitigation technology aboard a Lomar vessel and mark a significant step toward decarbonizing one of the world’s hardest-to-abate sectors.
Since launching our collaboration with lomarlabs in 2023 to help us accelerate our path from lab to sea, we’ve worked closely with their team to refine Bennu’s methane removal system for maritime use. Together, we’ve focused on adapting and stress-testing the technology for the unique challenges of oceangoing vessels—from salt-laden air and temperature swings to tight onboard energy constraints.
Lomar’s operational insight and lomarlabs’ commitment to innovation have been key to shaping a deployment-ready version of Bennu’s system. This summer’s pilot builds on those foundations and will be the first time our technology is tested in fully operational, real seagoing conditions aboard commercial vessels.
Testing in Real Seagoing Conditions
Our team will install Bennu methane removal technology aboard a Lomar vessel while undergoing dry-dock and refit work in China.
Once installed, the real work begins. As the ship embarks on its voyages - likely en route to the next port of call where it will load cargo - Bennu’s technology will operate under actual maritime conditions.
During this time, we will collect key performance data, including temperature, humidity, power use, and methane concentration levels. These metrics are essential to assessing our technology’s performance in the unpredictable and rugged environments that define global shipping routes. Most importantly, our measurement of methane removal at sea in real seagoing conditions will advance our design for scale-up conditions.
Aligning with Maritime Standards
Alongside Lomar and key regulators, we are taking great care to ensure every step of the pilot process meets international maritime guidelines and safety standards. As decarbonization becomes a growing focus across the industry, alignment with evolving regulations is not just a priority - it’s a necessity.
What’s Next
This upcoming pilot test marks a major milestone in our mission to reduce methane emissions in high-impact sectors. By demonstrating real-seagoing performance in the field, we gain critical insights and progress one step closer to commercial deployment at scale.
Stay tuned for updates this summer as we report back from the sea.
